Going Local – Your Guide to Swiss Schooling

by Margaret Oertig, M.Ed., Lecturer FHNW

Expatriate parents moving to Switzerland give high priority to obtaining the best possible education for their children from a very young age. Going Local provides them with a useful overview of the local school system and the educational opportunities it offers. Comprehensive and authoritative, it addresses all stages of education in all 26 cantons, from kindergarten all the way to apprenticeships and university. It also provides valuable information on early learning, learning the school language, special needs and the different paths to various types of tertiary education.

(Tips are given to help parents manage their relationship with the school, drawing on interviews with teachers and psychologists as well as the experiences and insights of other parents, both from Switzerland and abroad.)

EAPM European HR Award 2013

European HR Award 2013:
Win a journey to the EAPM Congress in Manchester on November 5, 2013

Dear members of the IHRC Community,

HR Swiss, as a member of the EAPM – European Association for People Management (www.eapm.org) with 32 national organisations invites you to participate at the contest for the European HR Award 2013.

Accept the challenge and participate in this year’s EAPM HR Award 2013 competition and hand in an essay (2000 words) about your vision of “future work” by end of June 2013. You may either write about the opportunities or the challenges for HR in the changing world of work, the workforce and the workplace. Take a fundamental look at the aspects that are shaping the future context for organisations and the HR profession.

These are big topics – but we would like entrants for the European HR Award 2013 to take one aspect of their vision for the future of work, the workforce or the workplace itself, and explore how (in a practical way) HR will play a leading role. For example, entrants could:
• Explore how technology has already changed the way people work, and the nature of work itself, and how much further this might impact HR’s role in the future
• Reflect on how the composition of the workforce and labour market demographics and diversity is changing, and what this means for organisations and HR
• Look at the issues around leadership, trust and culture that are needed to support long-term sustainable organisation success

We are looking for entries to examine a theme, and tell us what actions the HR profession will need to lead as a result, not just an analysis of a situation.
Attached please find all necessary and more detailed information as well as the essay of the last EAPM Award winner.
The contest is aiming at “next generation HR professionals” (without a formal age limit).

Milestones:
Deadline for your essay in English (no group works): June 30, 2013: as word document (2000 words) via E-Mail to jennifer.aellen@hr-swiss.ch, indicating the name of the author on the cover page only. All papers will be (on an anonymous basis) reviewed and evaluated by a Swiss Jury with the following members:
• Max Becker, member of the Boards EAPM and HR Swiss
• Gabriela Frei – Fürer, member of the Board ZGP/Zurich HR Association, head of young@ZGP
• Prof. Bruno Staffelbach, Zurich University, member of the Board ZGP
• Martin Zuber, member of the Board HR Swiss, HR Neuchâtel.

Finally, a jury on European level will review and evaluate all national winners and EAPM will honor the overall winner at the European HR Congress in Manchester on Nov. 5, 2013. The winner of the HR Swiss contest will be invited to travel to and participate free of charge at the Congress in Manchester on Nov. 5, 2013. Furthermore, “Persorama” will be portraying the Swiss winner.

Looking forward to receiving a lot of essays (do not worry about “perfect grammar” – content is the essence!).

Best regards,
Urs Burgunder, President HR Swiss
Max Becker, Board EAPM
