It’s almost a year since the International HR Community (IHRC), the international arm of Zürcher Gesellschaft für Personal-Management (ZGP), held its inaugural event at the offices of Swiss Re on Mythenquai and what a year it’s been. The financial crisis has created significant challenges for IHRC’s members who represent some of the most senior HR professionals, working in or coming from international environments, across Switzerland.

Amidst the headlines of profit downturns, cost saving measures and headcount reductions, appear the emotional headlines about the levels of Compensation being granted to senior management or specific individuals. We read in the newspapers about ongoing initiatives around greater transparency and externals controls, which take what is already an emotive topic into another level. “Abzocker Initiative” is something which by now, most of us has heard about.

“I believe we need to create a platform through which we can openly and candidly debate the real compensation challenges away from these emotional headlines” said Michelle Holmes, Managing Partner of M-Rewarding an independent Compensation Consultancy and support team member of IHRC. Michelle took the lead to coordinate this Special Event and with the immediate backing of Hanneke Frese, Ruud Rikhof and the rest of the IHRC core team, the call went out for speakers and panelists. Their overwhelming response underlined the importance of, and the interest in, the topic.

As a main sponsor of the event, John Bradley, Group Head of Human Resources at UBS, provided the opening remarks and set the scene for a dynamic and interactive afternoon.

Dr. Stephan Hostettler from Hostettler & Partner in Switzerland, Sophie Black from Mercer in the UK, Jeroen Janss from Towers Watson in Belgium and Daniel Kalt, Head of Economic Research at UBS in Switzerland provided a high caliber of expertise as the Keynote speakers who reflected on the challenges from a variety of geographic and industry perspectives.

Their input and perspectives on the current challenges as well as the outlook for 2011 provided stimulating input for the panel of practitioners who in heading Compensation & Benefits functions in large Swiss based organisations could reflect back the challenges from their daily reality. Compensation Heads from Credit Suisse, UBS, Zurich Financial Services, Swisscom, gategroup and Migros brought a wealth of practical experience and a willingness to talk openly and candidly about the most significant compensation challenges which they face.

With over 100 audience members who continued their discussions well on into the apéro following the event it was clearly a valuable event on a difficult topic and one which IHRC aims to repeat on an annual basis.
